The blood profile presentation of iron deficiency anemia is typical.
Disease description:
My girlfriend has recently seemed lethargic, weak all over, and pale. After examination, she was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia. What are the hematological findings in iron deficiency anemia?
The blood profile of iron deficiency anemia is characterized by microcytic hypochromic anemia. A complete blood count shows reduced red blood cell count, decreased hemoglobin levels, small red blood cell volume, slightly elevated platelet count in some patients, and essentially normal white blood cell count. Microscopic examination of the blood smear reveals that red blood cells are small in size with a round shape and central pallor (a biconcave disk appearance), and the area of central hypochromia is enlarged, indicating iron deficiency anemia. The morphology of white blood cells and platelets remains largely normal.
