Heparin sodium is generally used in premature infants due to incomplete liver development and liver dysfunction. Most preterm infants weigh less than 2,500 grams and have a head circumference smaller than 33 centimeters. Newborns with relatively better organ function and adaptability should receive special care. Because premature infants have underdeveloped livers, their blood coagulation mechanisms are immature, making them prone to severe bleeding. Heparin sodium is an anticoagulant medication.
