The prognosis of acute pancreatitis depends on its cause and the severity of the condition. Mild acute pancreatitis is self-limiting and can often be cured. However, it should be noted that if the cause of acute pancreatitis is biliary in origin, removal of the gallbladder and treatment of bile duct stones are necessary to prevent recurrence. Otherwise, even after successful treatment of mild pancreatitis, recurrence remains likely. Severe acute pancreatitis carries significant risks, potentially leading to multiple organ failure and a notable mortality rate. Reported mortality rates range from 10% to 20%. Without prompt and aggressive treatment, the condition may be life-threatening. Additionally, delayed or inadequate early intervention may result in serious complications such as large acute pseudocysts or abscesses, which can lead to pancreatogenic portal hypertension or even diabetes.
