Penicillin allergy may cause symptoms such as itching and fever. These usually appear within minutes to one hour after taking the medication. Mild cases present only with hives, flushing, and itching. In severe cases, patients may develop angioedema, bronchial asthma, or laryngeal edema, which could lead to decreased blood pressure and potentially anaphylactic shock. After several days or weeks of taking the drug, patients may develop a generalized rash accompanied by fever.
