It is a disease primarily characterized by high fever, headache, vomiting, seizures, and coma; in severe cases, patients may develop respiratory failure or cerebral herniation. Without specific treatments, the mortality rate can reach 10%–20%. Survivors often suffer from varying degrees of dementia, aphasia, limb paralysis, epilepsy, and other sequelae.
