What causes knee osteophyte formation?
Disease description:
I developed disuse osteoporosis due to prolonged bed rest following a tibial fracture. What causes knee bone spurs (osteophyte formation)?
The cause of knee osteophyte formation may be related to chronic overuse injury of the knee. Prolonged walking or physical labor can lead to bone spurs. During walking, continuous friction between bones causes thinning of the bone layer and inflammation. If not treated promptly, this may develop into chronic damage, causing significant harm to the knee. Arthritis may recur repeatedly, leading to calcification within the joint, thereby resulting in osteophyte formation.
