How to manage unconsciousness caused by brainstem hemorrhage
Disease description:
Remaining unconscious due to brainstem hemorrhage, not knowing what to do all along—how should coma caused by brainstem hemorrhage be managed?
Unconsciousness caused by brainstem hemorrhage can be improved through external ventricular drainage to alleviate elevated intracranial pressure. The brainstem contains the reticular activating system; if the hematoma or cerebral edema worsens after bleeding and affects this system, it can lead to impaired consciousness—namely, coma. In severe cases, this may compromise respiration and heart function, posing a life-threatening risk. Carefully monitor the patient's breathing, as brainstem hemorrhage can impair respiratory function and rhythm. If respiratory rate becomes slow or shallow, immediate endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation should be initiated to ensure adequate oxygen supply.
