Taking antihypertensive medication does not affect menstruation. Most patients develop high blood pressure after menopause, so it has little relation to the menstrual cycle. If a patient experiences menstrual irregularities after starting antihypertensive drugs, she should consider which stage of life she is in. Middle-aged women may experience menstrual disturbances while taking antihypertensive medications, but this is unlikely to be a direct effect of the drug. Menstrual cycles can also be influenced by psychological stress and seasonal changes. Women approaching perimenopause or menopause often experience naturally irregular periods.
