Why do people get intercostal neuralgia?
Disease description:
Doctor, my relative recently developed intercostal neuralgia. Could you please explain what causes intercostal neuralgia?
Intercostal neuralgia is a painful condition caused by nerve damage or sudden pain. It is mainly due to prolonged physical activity involving strain and overuse of the chest muscles, chronic stress, and compression of nerves by surrounding tissues. It may also result from infections in tendons or soft tissues at either end of the ribs, or specific diseases such as rheumatism, chronic strain, and cancer.
