Muscle twitching is a phenomenon of spontaneous muscle contraction. It may result from muscle pain or joint pain, be a symptom of neurological disorders, or a reaction to medications or toxins. It can occur in any part of the body—sometimes limited to a single muscle group, and at other times involving the entire body. Muscle twitching often occurs under conditions of muscle tension, when muscle tone increases and greater energy is consumed during contraction, leading to the sensation of twitching.
