What causes sudden hyperventilation?

Hello, During an episode, breathing suddenly accelerates. Patients commonly report dyspnea, chest tightness, a sensation of suffocation, chest pain, palpitations, and tachycardia. Numbness may occur in the extremities and face, accompanied by carpopedal spasms, muscle twitching, and even tetany; headache, dizziness, and altered consciousness may also be present. Physical examination typically reveals no positive findings. Patients usually have underlying conditions such as respiratory tract infections, cardiac disease, or renal disease. Accelerated respiratory effort leads to decreased arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO₂ < 5 kPa), resulting in respiratory alkalosis and sympathetic nervous system activation—clinically manifesting as the aforementioned symptoms.
