I recently caught the flu but haven't sought treatment, and now I'm experiencing some lingering symptoms. Could you please explain the differences in aftereffects between type A and type B influenza?

Dr. Yang Ziqi
The differences between the aftereffects of influenza A and influenza B mainly lie in their manifestations and severity. Post-influenza complications of influenza A may include pulmonary fibrosis, joint deformities, and lower limb edema, which primarily occur in patients who did not receive timely treatment or had severe illness. Pulmonary fibrosis, in particular, may result from viral invasion of the lungs and the subsequent inflammatory response. In contrast, the aftereffects of influenza B are generally milder, mainly manifesting as post-influenza fatigue and weakness, or respiratory complications such as pneumonia or bronchitis, which are more commonly seen in elderly individuals, pregnant women, patients with chronic diseases, or those with compromised immune systems.
