What does low HDL cholesterol mean?
Disease description:
I went for a medical checkup and saw on the report that my HDL cholesterol is low. Could you please explain what this means?
High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) is an important blood lipid factor associated with the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Low HDL cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and may lead to heart disease, stroke, and other conditions. Typically, low HDL cholesterol may result from unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, smoking, or excessive alcohol consumption. Therefore, improving dietary habits, reducing intake of high-fat foods, eating more fresh vegetables and fruits, engaging in regular daily exercise, quitting smoking, and abstaining from alcohol can all help increase HDL cholesterol levels.
