Berberine has effects of clearing heat, removing dampness, regulating qi to relieve pain, and stopping diarrhea and dysentery. It shows good efficacy in treating infections caused by Escherichia coli and Shigella bacteria, and can also be used to treat chronic dysentery in the elderly, though it must be strictly applied under medical supervision. Berberine can inhibit gastric acid secretion and, to some extent, protect the gastric mucosa, making it commonly used in the treatment of gastric ulcers. However, it should be noted that improper or blind use may lead to side effects, mainly including nausea, vomiting, skin itching, and constipation, which could be detrimental to health.
