The results of an eye examination are expressed in terms of spherical (S) and cylindrical (C) power. The spherical value indicates the degree of myopia or hyperopia, with a negative number representing myopia and a positive number representing hyperopia. The cylindrical value indicates the degree of astigmatism, accompanied by an axis value that specifies the direction of the astigmatism. "R" stands for the right eye, "L" for the left eye, "DS" for diopters of sphere (the degree of myopia or hyperopia), "DC" for diopters of cylinder (astigmatism), and "AX" for axis. A minus sign ("-") is used before the value to indicate myopia.
