Can I rinse my mouth after tooth extraction?
Disease description:
Can I rinse my mouth after tooth extraction?
Rinsing the mouth after tooth extraction is not recommended. After a tooth is removed, a wound forms in the socket, and rinsing at this stage may lead to the following: 1. Rinsing might dislodge the blood clot, causing increased bleeding, prolonging wound healing, and potentially leading to dry socket. 2. Rinsing could also introduce oral bacteria into the wound, increasing the risk of infection and symptoms such as redness, swelling, and pain. 3. The act of rinsing may allow bacteria to enter exposed blood vessels and subsequently circulate throughout the body, triggering systemic symptoms like facial swelling and pain. It is advised to avoid rinsing after tooth extraction and to wait until the wound has healed before resuming oral hygiene practices.
