Symptoms of chilblains
Disease description:
Every winter, I get bluish-purple lumps on my hands. I think they might be chilblains. Could you please tell me what symptoms chilblains have?
Chilblains is a type of skin damage caused by cold exposure. In affected areas, the skin becomes red and swollen due to impaired local blood circulation. Subsequently, patients may experience intense itching and pain, which are particularly pronounced under cold conditions. As the condition progresses, blisters may develop at the swollen sites; once these blisters rupture, they can lead to ulcers and even secondary infections. These symptoms typically appear gradually within several hours to days after cold exposure and commonly affect body parts frequently exposed to cold environments, such as fingers, toes, and earlobes. Upon noticing these symptoms, individuals should immediately move out of the cold environment to prevent further deterioration. For mild cases, applying local warmth and massage may help improve blood circulation and alleviate symptoms. However, if symptoms are severe—such as the presence of blisters or ulcers—prompt medical attention is necessary so that appropriate medication can be prescribed based on the clinical assessment.
