Dr. Wang Shuai
Corneal injury is a common ophthalmic condition with diverse causes and significant potential harm. 1. Trauma is a major cause of corneal damage; for instance, friction from sand or grit, or physical impact, may lead to epithelial loss or erosion, and in severe cases, even corneal ulcers. 2. Infection is another common factor causing corneal injury—pathogens invading the eye can breach the corneal epithelial barrier, resulting in local necrosis. 3. Additionally, poor habits such as overuse of eye drops, prolonged wearing of contact lenses, and eye strain may also damage the cornea. 4. Symptoms of corneal injury include redness and pain in the eye, excessive tearing, decreased vision or blindness, photophobia, and a foreign body sensation. Once such symptoms appear, prompt medical attention is necessary. Treatment generally involves medication and surgical interventions aimed at promoting corneal healing and preventing infection.
