What does it mean when the eyes turn yellow?

Yellowing of the eyes may be caused by several factors: 1. Dietary factors: Consuming large amounts of foods rich in carotene—such as carrots and oranges—in a short period may lead to yellow discoloration of the sclera (the white part of the eye). This condition is usually temporary and resolves after adjusting the diet. 2. Medication factors: Long-term use of medications containing yellow pigments, such as vitamin B2 (riboflavin), may also cause changes in scleral color. Symptoms typically improve after discontinuing the medication for a period of time. 3. Liver or biliary diseases: Liver conditions such as hepatitis or cirrhosis can impair liver function, disrupting the normal metabolism of bilirubin and leading to jaundice, which manifests as yellowing of the eyes.
