The optimal timing for cataract surgery varies and cannot be generalized. For cataract patients, the decision on when to undergo surgery primarily depends on the degree of lens opacity and the patient's visual function. Generally, surgery is recommended when cataracts begin to affect daily activities—such as when vision declines to below 0.3—or when lens clouding becomes significant. For children with congenital cataracts, especially those with bilateral complete cataracts, surgery should ideally be performed within one to two months after birth, and no later than six months, to prevent interference with visual development. For other types of cataracts—such as when lens opacities are located in the pupillary area or vision drops below 0.3—early surgical intervention is also advised. In early-stage cataracts, medical treatment may be considered to slow disease progression. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet rich in zinc, selenium, and vitamins can help alleviate disease progression.
