Can vocal cord polyps disappear with medication?
Disease description:
After being diagnosed with vocal cord polyps, I would prefer not to have surgery and am considering trying medication for a period of time. Can vocal cord polyps disappear with medication?
Whether vocal cord polyps can disappear with medication mainly depends on the severity and duration of the polyps.
1. Early, small polyps: For early-stage, small vocal cord polyps, there is a possibility of resolution through medical treatment, such as oral anti-inflammatory drugs or corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone), as well as steam inhalation or nebulized therapy. Combining these treatments with voice rest and lifestyle modifications—such as increased fluid intake, quitting smoking and alcohol, and avoiding spicy or irritating foods—can promote healing and regression of the polyps.
2. Severe or long-standing polyps: If the vocal cord polyps are large and have been present for a prolonged period, especially when they have become fibrotic, medication is usually ineffective. In such cases, surgical intervention (e.g., vocal cord polyp excision) is typically required to completely remove the polyps.
