Disease description:

The watermelon I bought last night was already somewhat overripe. After being stored in the refrigerator overnight, its texture tasted quite unpleasant today. I'm wondering, is it safe to eat watermelon that has been refrigerated overnight?

Whether leftover watermelon from the previous day is safe to eat mainly depends on storage conditions and duration. If the watermelon is promptly refrigerated after being cut, kept at a temperature below 4°C, and properly sealed with plastic wrap, it is generally safe for consumption. However, note that watermelon should not be stored in the refrigerator for more than 24 hours, as the risk of bacterial growth increases over time. Even in the refrigerator, contamination may occur if the watermelon comes into contact with bacteria from knives, cutting boards, or other foods. Additionally, if the watermelon develops an off odor, discoloration, or a slimy surface, these are signs of spoilage and it should not be consumed. To reduce the risk of food poisoning, it's best to finish freshly cut watermelon on the same day. If you cannot finish it, refrigerate it promptly and consume it as soon as possible. Never eat watermelon left at room temperature for extended periods, especially during hot summer months when bacteria multiply more rapidly.
