Side effects of Lycii Cortex
Disease description:
I am currently going through menopause and have been experiencing frequent hot flashes. My doctor prescribed me Lycii Cortex (Di Gu Pi) and instructed me to boil it for tea. Are there any side effects associated with Lycii Cortex?
Lycii Cortex (Di Gu Pi) is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine and is known for its effects of clearing lung heat, reducing fire toxicity, and cooling the blood to alleviate fever. However, Lycii Cortex may also have certain side effects and precautions for use:
1. Gastrointestinal reactions: Some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort after taking it, such as nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
2. Allergic reactions: Individuals with sensitive constitutions may develop allergic reactions to its components, such as skin rashes or itching.
3. Drug interactions: Lycii Cortex may affect the absorption or metabolism of other medications, especially when used in combination with compound herbal formulas or Western medicines, potentially enhancing or diminishing their efficacy.
4. Unsuitable constitution: For individuals with deficiency-cold in the spleen and stomach or those with weak constitutions, long-term or excessive use may exacerbate internal coldness and lead to physical discomfort.
5. Pregnant and special populations: Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a physician before use, as it may affect the fetus or newborn.
To ensure safety, it is advisable to consult a licensed TCM practitioner before using Lycii Cortex and to develop an appropriate treatment plan based on individual constitution and health status.
