The appearance of blackish-purple marks after cupping is not solely due to dampness. When the body has excessive dampness, cupping may draw and concentrate dampness from the surrounding tissues, causing an accumulation of dampness that leads to skin discoloration and the formation of dark purple marks. However, other factors may also contribute to such blackish-purple appearances after cupping, including high suction pressure within the cups, prolonged cupping duration, improper technique, burns, excessive cold, stagnation of cold-dampness, or qi and blood stasis. High suction pressure and extended cupping time can exert excessive compression or irritation on the skin, resulting in blackish-purple discoloration. Improper operation may also damage the skin—for instance, excessive negative pressure during cupping might cause local skin breakage and bleeding, leading to dark purple marks. Excessive cold or obstruction due to cold-dampness can similarly result in blackish-purple marks during cupping. Qi and blood stasis, often caused by excessive stress, irregular lifestyle, or poor sleep patterns, typically manifests as localized stagnation of qi and blood, which causes the skin to appear blackish-purple after cupping.
