How to correct gummy smile
Disease description:
My teeth don't look good at all, and my gums show prominently every time I smile. I'm considering undergoing cosmetic dental treatment to fix this. Could you please advise on the best way to correct this issue?
1. Mild correction: For mild gummy smiles, orthodontic treatment with braces may be considered. Braces apply external pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions, improving jaw and facial alignment and tooth arrangement, thereby reducing gum exposure.
2. Severe correction: For more severe cases of gummy smile, especially those involving significant jaw or facial deformities, orthognathic surgery may be required. Surgical procedures may involve alveolar bone resection, movement or tilting of the upper front teeth, to reduce the vertical distance between upper and lower teeth and correct the degree of anterior protrusion of the upper front teeth.
3. Specific conditions: In a few cases, a gummy smile may result from an excessively short upper lip. In such instances, surgical lengthening of the upper lip can be considered. This procedure transfers skin from the nasolabial fold to increase the height of the upper lip, thus resolving the issue of excessive gum exposure. It is recommended that treatment be performed under the guidance of a qualified medical professional.
