Is it dangerous to carry twins?
Disease description:
My best friend is pregnant, and the examination showed she's having twins. I've heard that carrying twins can be risky—is that true?

Carrying twins does pose certain risks compared to singleton pregnancies, though the degree of risk varies among individuals.
1. Twin pregnancies increase the risk of maternal complications, including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, anemia, polyhydramnios, preterm premature rupture of membranes, uterine atony, placental abruption, and postpartum hemorrhage. The risk of hypertensive disorders in twin pregnancies is 3 to 4 times higher than in singleton pregnancies, and the risk of anemia is 2.4 times greater.
2. Twin pregnancies also elevate the risk of perinatal complications, such as a 7 to 10-fold increased risk of preterm birth and a higher incidence of fetal malformations.
3. If the mother is young and in good physical condition, the associated risks are relatively lower. However, for advanced maternal age pregnancies, where organ and system functions may be declining, carrying twins generally poses significantly greater risks.
