What is acute fatty liver of pregnancy?
Disease description:
I've been pregnant for about 8 months, and during a hospital checkup, I was diagnosed with fatty liver of pregnancy. What is fatty liver of pregnancy?
Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP), also known as acute fatty liver of pregnancy or idiopathic fatty liver of pregnancy, is a rare and life-threatening condition unique to the late stages of pregnancy. Its exact cause remains unclear, but it is believed to be associated with hormonal changes during pregnancy that may impair fatty acid metabolism, leading to the accumulation of free fatty acids in hepatocytes and other organs, thereby triggering multi-organ dysfunction. AFLP has an early onset and progresses rapidly, with clinical manifestations similar to those of fulminant hepatitis, including fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment usually requires termination of pregnancy for the patient to have a chance of recovery. Pregnant women should maintain a balanced diet and avoid excessive nutrition during pregnancy to reduce the risk of developing acute fatty liver of pregnancy.
