Can I feed my baby if the baby has hiccups?
Disease description:
Recently, my baby has been hiccupping constantly during feeding, which is quite concerning. May I ask, can I continue feeding when the baby has hiccups?
Whether a baby can be fed while hiccupping depends on the severity and underlying cause of the hiccups. Generally, infant hiccups are often caused by physiological factors such as spasms of the diaphragm or mild stomach irritation. If the hiccups are mild and do not interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption, feeding can usually continue. Providing milk ensures adequate nutrition and typically does not cause serious harm to the baby. However, if the hiccups are severe and accompanied by gastrointestinal spasms, nausea, or vomiting, feeding may further irritate the digestive tract, worsen discomfort, or lead to choking or coughing. In such cases, feeding should be avoided.
