It is generally not recommended to feed a newborn immediately when he or she has hiccups.

Hiccups are common among newborns and are usually caused by swallowed air or incomplete development of the digestive system. Feeding directly during hiccups may cause the baby to swallow more air, worsening the hiccups. Additionally, because a newborn's swallowing function is not yet fully developed, feeding during hiccups may lead to difficulty swallowing, which can result in spitting up or choking. Moreover, if milk accidentally enters the trachea, it may cause respiratory infections or aspiration pneumonia, posing a threat to the newborn's health.

When a newborn has hiccups, parents are advised to first observe the baby's condition and help the baby release gas—for example, by gently patting the baby's back to help expel gas from the stomach. If the baby continues to have hiccups, parents can try changing the baby's position or use a pacifier to help relax the throat muscles and reduce hiccups. If the hiccups persist or worsen, medical advice should be sought promptly. Meanwhile, during feeding, parents should also pay attention to proper feeding posture and the amount of milk given to avoid unnecessary health risks.
