How to manage upper ureteral calculi
Disease description:
My friend said he went to the hospital for kidney stones and was diagnosed with an upper ureteral stone. How should an upper ureteral stone be treated?
The management of upper ureteral calculi depends on the size, location of the stone, and the patient's overall condition. For smaller stones, increasing fluid intake, engaging in moderate physical activity, and taking medications to facilitate stone passage may promote spontaneous expulsion. If the stone is large or causes severe symptoms such as pain or hydronephrosis, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) may be required to break the stone into smaller fragments for elimination, or ureteroscopic lithotomy may be performed to directly remove the stone. During treatment, patients should actively follow their physician's recommendations, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and undergo regular follow-up examinations to ensure proper management of the condition.
