Uterine prolapse refers to the downward displacement of the uterus. Its main causes include: 1. Childbirth injury: This is the primary cause of uterine prolapse, especially in cases of difficult labor, prolonged second stage of labor, or operative vaginal deliveries, which can easily lead to damage of the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. 2. Increased intra-abdominal pressure: Conditions such as chronic cough, long-term constipation, and obesity increase intra-abdominal pressure, promoting the descent of the uterus along the vaginal canal. 3. Congenital developmental abnormalities: Some women who have never given birth may still develop uterine prolapse due to congenital underdevelopment of the supportive tissues of the reproductive organs. 4. Malnutrition and aging: Malnutrition may lead to loosening of the pelvic fascia and muscle atrophy, reducing support for the uterus. With aging, ovarian function declines and estrogen levels drop, causing relaxation of the pelvic floor supportive tissues, which also predisposes to uterine prolapse. These factors may act independently or synergistically in causing uterine prolapse.
