What causes an itchy anus?
Disease description:
My grandpa's bottom is always itchy. What could be causing an itchy bottom?

"Anal itching" is actually a condition known as pruritus ani, which may be caused by various factors:
1. Skin physiological changes: With aging, especially in the elderly, sebaceous gland secretion function declines, leading to dry skin that is prone to causing itchiness around the anus.
2. Fungal infection: In damp and hot environments, particularly among obese individuals who neglect personal hygiene, fungal infections can easily develop and result in anal itching.
3. Skin disorders: Conditions such as perianal eczema and neurodermatitis often come with intense itching.
4. Anorectal diseases: Anal fissures, hemorrhoids, and other anorectal conditions may increase anal discharge. If not properly cleaned, this can lead to itching.
5. Allergic reactions: Certain foods, medications, or contact substances may trigger allergic reactions that cause anal itching.
Patients with concerns are advised to seek timely medical consultation.
