Will common warts on the hands go away on their own?
Disease description:
I've noticed warts on my hands in the past few days, but I haven't been in contact with any known sources of infection. Can common hand warts go away on their own?
Common warts on the hands are benign skin growths caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). In some patients, common warts may resolve spontaneously. Studies indicate that approximately 60% of common warts regress naturally within two years, particularly in individuals with stronger immune systems, who tend to recover more quickly. During spontaneous resolution, patients may notice mild changes such as sudden itching, redness and swelling at the base of the wart, enlargement and instability of the lesion, or the disappearance of individual warts accompanied by the emergence of new, smaller warts. The speed and extent of self-resolution are influenced by various factors, including the patient's immune status, and the number and size of warts. Although common warts can resolve on their own, due to potential discomfort and cosmetic concerns, patients may also opt for active treatment measures, such as medication, physical therapies, or surgical intervention.
