It is usually normal to experience a bitter taste in the mouth after quitting smoking. This mainly occurs because long-term smoking leads to excessive accumulation of nicotine in the body. After abruptly stopping smoking, the rebound effect of nicotine and withdrawal symptoms may trigger discomfort such as a bitter taste. Besides nicotine's effects, psychological changes during the quitting process—such as anxiety and irritability—may also indirectly contribute to the sensation of bitterness. Additionally, certain pathological factors like reflux esophagitis or bile reflux gastritis might worsen the bitter taste during smoking cessation. If a bitter taste occurs while quitting smoking, there's generally no need for excessive concern; it can be alleviated by maintaining good oral hygiene, adjusting diet, and managing mental well-being. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, or are accompanied by other discomforts, prompt medical consultation is recommended.
