Huoxiang Zhengqi Water is a traditional Chinese medicine primarily used for relieving exterior symptoms, resolving dampness, regulating qi, and harmonizing the middle jiao. It is commonly prescribed for colds caused by exogenous wind-cold, internal injury due to damp stagnation, or summer-dampness. However, Huoxiang Zhengqi Water is not effective for treating paronychia. Paronychia is an acute purulent infection of the soft tissues surrounding the nail, usually caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. The main ingredients of Huoxiang Zhengqi Water—such as Atractylodes, Citrus peel, and Magnolia bark—do not possess antibacterial or anti-inflammatory properties, and therefore cannot effectively target the pathogens responsible for paronychia. Treatment for paronychia typically involves topical or oral antibiotics aimed at combating infection and reducing inflammation. Physical therapies, such as infrared treatment, may also be used as adjunctive measures. In severe cases, surgical intervention—such as incision and drainage or nail removal—may be required. Huoxiang Zhengqi Water is not suitable for treating paronychia, and patients should follow medical advice when choosing appropriate treatments.
