Disease description:

In the past few days, I have noticed that the skin around the fingernail of my right index finger has become red, swollen, and painful, especially when touched. I suspect this might be an early sign of paronychia. Considering that I have miconazole nitrate cream at home, I would like to know whether this cream is suitable for treating paronychia?

Redness, swelling, and pain around the fingernails may be symptoms of paronychia. Paronychia is usually caused by bacterial infection, but can also result from improper trimming of nails, frequent exposure to chemicals, and other factors.

Miconazole nitrate cream is a topical antifungal medication primarily used to treat skin and nail infections caused by fungi, such as ringworm, jock itch, and athlete's foot. Therefore, miconazole nitrate cream may not be suitable for treating paronychia.

Treatment may follow medical advice to use antibiotics targeted against Gram-positive bacteria, such as mupirocin ointment or compound polymyxin B ointment. If symptoms are severe, such as the presence of pus, surgical drainage or nail removal may be required.
