Mumps may cause lymph node swelling. Mumps, a common inflammatory condition affecting the soft tissues of the parotid gland, whether epidemic mumps or obstructive sialadenitis, can lead to swelling and pain in nearby and cervical lymph nodes. This condition primarily occurs because the mumps virus may spread through the bloodstream, invade the lymph nodes, and cause them to become stimulated and enlarged. Additionally, the overall poor systemic condition and severe local inflammation caused by mumps can also stimulate surrounding lymph nodes, resulting in lymphadenopathy with tenderness. Usually, once mumps resolves, the lymph nodes gradually decrease in size and the swelling and pain subside. However, please note that lymph node enlargement may also result from other causes such as lymphadenitis or tuberculous lymphadenitis. Therefore, when related symptoms occur, it is advisable to seek timely medical evaluation for an accurate diagnosis.
