How to treat fungal nail infection
Disease description:
My grandfather has gray nail (fungal nail infection), and he wants to go to the hospital for treatment. How is gray nail treated?
The treatment of onychomycosis (fungal nail infection) mainly includes the following methods:
1. Surgical treatment: Under local anesthesia, the infected nail is removed. This method is suitable for single, severe cases of onychomycosis. However, it causes a large wound surface, is prone to bleeding, and is not recommended for patients with heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes.
2. Oral medications: Such as terbinafine tablets and itraconazole, which are suitable when multiple nails are affected. However, this approach requires a long treatment course and high drug dosage, necessitating consistent use and careful monitoring for adverse effects.
3. Topical treatments: Including soaking the affected nail in acetic acid or applying antifungal medication directly. Soaking in acetic acid must be continued for at least 3–6 months, while topical medications also require prolonged, consistent application to achieve results.
4. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM): For example, soaking the affected nail in a mixture of vinegar, Brucea javanica, Stemona tuberosa, and white liquor, or applying a mixture of impatiens and alum. These methods also require long-term treatment.
Treating onychomycosis requires patience and persistence. Choosing an appropriate method and strictly following medical advice are key to successful management.
