How to treat worsening gray nail fungus
Disease description:
I previously had a fungal infection (onychomycosis) on the big toe of my left foot, and now multiple toenails on both feet have developed symptoms of fungal infection. How should I treat it as the condition worsens?
When onychomycosis becomes more severe, treatment methods should be selected according to the condition, usually including the following:
1. **Medication therapy**: Apply topical antifungal medications, such as terbinafine hydrochloride gel or amorolfine hydrochloride lotion. If multiple nails are affected by tinea unguium, oral antifungal medications, such as terbinafine tablets or itraconazole capsules, may be prescribed. Medication therapy typically requires sufficient dosage and long-term administration for better therapeutic effects.
2. **Surgical treatment**: When medication therapy is ineffective or the affected nail condition is complex, surgical treatment, such as nail avulsion, may be considered. However, this method creates a large wound surface, may cause bleeding or infection, and may result in postoperative pain.
3. **Physical therapy**: Laser therapy, photodynamic therapy, and similar approaches may also be tried to effectively inhibit fungal replication.
4. **Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment**: Methods such as acupuncture and moxibustion may be used. Additionally, vinegar-based herbal soaking solutions, herbal ointments, and powders may be selected for treatment. During the treatment process, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene habits, follow medical advice, and avoid self-medicating or discontinuing medication without guidance.
