Why do I have a bitter taste and bad breath?
Disease description:
My boyfriend has bad breath whenever he speaks, and he also experiences a bitter taste in his mouth. I'm not sure what's going on. Why does someone have a bitter taste and bad breath?
Common causes of bitter taste and bad breath include excessive internal damp-heat, stomach heat, and oral diseases. Individuals with a damp-heat constitution or those with unhealthy dietary habits—such as excessive consumption of greasy, sweet, spicy, or irritating foods—may experience aggravated internal damp-heat, leading to bitter taste and bad breath, often accompanied by symptoms like dry mouth and decreased appetite. Stomach heat may result from overconsumption of spicy foods or emotional stress, causing turbid qi to rise from the stomach and trigger bad breath and a bitter taste. Oral conditions such as dental caries and periodontal abscesses can also directly cause oral odor. To alleviate bitter taste and bad breath, it is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular tooth brushing, rinsing, and routine dental check-ups and treatments. Additionally, adjusting dietary habits by increasing intake of foods with heat-clearing and detoxifying properties—such as mung beans and Chinese yam—is beneficial. If symptoms persist, prompt medical consultation is advised to identify the underlying cause and receive targeted treatment.
