A friend was diagnosed with mumps. I'm not sure whether this disease requires isolation. Does everyone with mumps need to be isolated?

Not all patients with parotitis require isolation. There are several types of parotitis, including epidemic parotitis (mumps), suppurative parotitis, chronic obstructive parotitis, and autoimmune parotitis. For epidemic parotitis, which is highly contagious and primarily spreads through the respiratory tract and droplets, isolation for 1–2 weeks during the illness period is usually necessary. However, other types of parotitis, such as suppurative parotitis, are typically caused by bacterial infections, narrowing of the salivary duct opening, or autoimmune abnormalities, and are not contagious; therefore, isolation is not required during the illness. Patients with parotitis are advised to seek medical attention promptly and follow healthcare professionals' recommendations for appropriate management.
