Waking up at night with a dry mouth and sore throat
Disease description:
For the past two nights, I've been waking up in the middle of the night feeling extremely thirsty with a very dry mouth. Why do I wake up at night with such a dry mouth and throat?
Waking up at night with a dry mouth and dry throat may involve several factors. If the sleeping environment is too dry, or if adequate hydration is not maintained before bedtime, excessive evaporation of body fluids may occur, leading to a sensation of dryness in the mouth and throat. Personal lifestyle habits can also play a role—for example, consuming overly salty dinners, drinking excessive alcohol, or ingesting beverages high in caffeine may irritate the mouth and throat, resulting in dryness upon waking. Certain health conditions, such as diabetes or Sjögren's syndrome, may reduce saliva production and consequently cause dry mouth and throat. To alleviate this symptom, it is recommended to drink an appropriate amount of water before bed, maintain suitable indoor humidity, and adjust dietary habits by reducing intake of irritating foods and beverages. If symptoms persist or worsen, prompt medical consultation is advised to rule out underlying health issues.
