Why do tooth stones (tartar) form?
Disease description:
What causes dental calculus, and why does it form?

The formation of dental calculus is the result of multiple factors acting in combination.
1. Bacteria in the mouth continuously break down food residues, producing acidic substances. These acids can erode the tooth surface, creating tiny pits.
2. Bacteria combine with minerals in saliva and gradually deposit on the tooth surface, especially along the gum line and in areas between teeth that are difficult to clean. Over time, these deposits accumulate and harden, forming dental calculus.
3. Poor oral hygiene habits, such as irregular tooth brushing, not using dental floss or mouthwash, can lead to the retention of food particles and bacteria in the mouth, accelerating the formation of dental calculus.
4. Misaligned teeth and the presence of dentures in the mouth also increase the risk of dental calculus formation.
Therefore, maintaining good oral hygiene practices and undergoing regular dental checkups and cleanings are key to preventing the formation of dental calculus.
