What is pediatric mumps and how is it treated?
Disease description:
My child has mumps, but I don't know what's causing it or how to manage it. What is childhood mumps, and how is it treated?
Mumps in children is primarily caused by the mumps virus, an acute respiratory infectious disease that can occur throughout the year, with peak incidence during winter and spring. Main symptoms include swelling and pain of the salivary glands, possibly accompanied by fever, loss of appetite, and general weakness. The following treatment approaches may be used for pediatric mumps:
1. Western medical treatment: For epidemic parotitis, antiviral medications may be used; for suppurative parotitis, sensitive antibiotics are required. Additionally, antipyretic analgesics or pain relievers may be administered according to symptoms. If an abscess develops, incision and drainage may be performed.
2. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment: Internally administered and externally applied herbal medicines that clear heat, detoxify, resolve nodules, and reduce swelling may be used, along with acupuncture at specific points.
Please note that specific treatments should be conducted under the guidance of a physician. Parents should also closely monitor their child's condition and seek timely medical care when necessary.
