Disease description:

The child is still very young and often needs to be held. These days, I've been feeling severe wrist pain. After an examination, the doctor diagnosed it as tenosynovitis. How does holding the baby cause tenosynovitis?

Dr. Xu Shuai
Baby-carrying tenosynovitis, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis or "mother's wrist," is mainly caused by the following factors: 1. **Chronic strain**: Prolonged baby carrying, especially using the hands to support the baby's head or repeatedly lifting heavy objects, can lead to excessive and repetitive stretching of the tendons and tendon sheaths, resulting in localized tissue strain, inflammation, and edema. 2. **Improper posture**: During breastfeeding or holding the baby while sleeping, if the wrist remains in a dorsiflexed position for a long time, pressure within the carpal tunnel increases, compressing the nerves and blood vessels. This may easily cause radial-sided numbness and pain, as well as finger numbness. 3. **Exposure to cold**: Failure to keep the wrist warm and exposure to cold air may worsen the condition or trigger and exacerbate tenosynovitis. To prevent and treat baby-carrying tenosynovitis, it is important to adjust carrying posture, avoid maintaining the same posture for prolonged periods, take appropriate rest breaks, keep warm, and seek medical attention promptly when necessary.
