Is there any side effect of injection for shoulder periarthritis?
Disease description:
I have had shoulder periarthritis for several years, and during this period the pain recurred and became unbearable. I then received a corticosteroid injection. I would like to know whether corticosteroid injections for shoulder periarthritis have any side effects.
Corticosteroid injections for shoulder periarthritis do have potential side effects, mainly including the following:
1. **Risk of infection**: Any injection carries a risk of infection. Although corticosteroid injections are typically performed under sterile conditions, there is still a possibility of introducing bacteria or other pathogens, leading to infection.
2. **Bleeding and hematoma**: Blood vessels may be damaged during the injection, resulting in bleeding or hematoma formation.
3. **Nerve injury**: If the needle inadvertently punctures surrounding nerve tissues, it may cause pain, numbness, or other neurological impairments.
4. **Allergic reaction**: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the injected medication, such as redness, itching, or swelling of the skin.
5. **Other complications**: Long-term or frequent corticosteroid injections may lead to local soft tissue necrosis, muscle atrophy, ligament adhesion, and osteoporosis.
Corticosteroid injections for shoulder periarthritis should be performed under the guidance of a physician. Post-injection care and observation are also important to prevent or minimize potential side effects.
