Disease description:

My newborn baby, only one week old, was found to have slightly yellow skin. After going to the hospital for examination, the doctor diagnosed jaundice with a bilirubin level of 17 mg/dL. I would like to ask, is blue light therapy necessary for a bilirubin level of 17?

Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng
Whether a bilirubin level of 17 mg/dl requires phototherapy should be determined based on individual circumstances. Generally speaking, the criteria for phototherapy depend on the infant's age and the severity of jaundice. Within the first 24 hours after birth, if the bilirubin level exceeds 9 mg/dl; between 1 to 2 days of age, if it exceeds 12 mg/dl; and between 2 to 3 days of age, if it exceeds 15 mg/dl, phototherapy may be considered. A bilirubin level of 17 mg/dl has already exceeded these thresholds, so phototherapy is recommended. Blue-light phototherapy can effectively reduce bilirubin concentration and promote bilirubin excretion, thereby alleviating jaundice symptoms. Additionally, phototherapy can protect the liver, stimulate bile secretion, and aid in the treatment of neonatal jaundice. During treatment, the infant's bilirubin levels and clinical condition should be closely monitored, and appropriate treatment adjustments should be made according to the physician's recommendations.
