Are common warts related to genital warts?
Disease description:
I have developed several small bumps on the surface of my skin. After undergoing examination at the hospital, the doctor diagnosed them as common warts. Are common warts related to genital warts?
Common warts and genital warts share the same etiology but differ significantly in clinical presentation and transmissibility. They require distinct approaches for treatment and prevention.
1. Same Etiology: Both are skin diseases caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).
2. Different Clinical Presentations: Common warts typically occur on the fingers, back of the hands, and soles of the feet. They appear as round or polygonal papules with a hard, rough surface. In contrast, genital warts primarily develop in genital areas, such as the urethral opening, glans, and penis in males, and the vagina, labia majora/minora, and anus in females. They present as single or multiple small red papules with a soft texture.
3. Differences in Transmissibility: As a sexually transmitted disease, genital warts are significantly more contagious than common warts, which have relatively lower transmissibility.
