A feeling of distension and pain in the rectum may be related to multiple possible causes. Functional constipation causes stool to accumulate in the rectum, resulting in a sensation of distension and pain. Rectal inflammation produces pain due to irritation from inflammatory conditions. Rectal tumors may cause distension and pain due to narrowing of the lumen and pressure on surrounding tissues. Extrinsic diseases, such as a prostatic abscess, can sometimes cause rectal pain as well. In addition, factors such as foreign body obstruction and prolapsed hemorrhoids may also lead to rectal discomfort.
