Will gray nail heal by itself?
Disease description:
I noticed that the color of my toes is slightly grayish. After consulting online, I learned that it might be caused by a fungal nail infection (onychomycosis). However, I don't think it's as serious as I imagined. May I ask if a fungal nail infection can heal on its own?
Onychomycosis, a nail disease caused by fungal infection, generally does not resolve spontaneously. The infection originates from fungi located beneath the nail, which can easily spread between fingers and toes. Without appropriate treatment, it is difficult for the body's immune system alone to effectively control and eliminate the fungi. Additionally, when the patient's immunity is compromised—such as from staying up late, alcohol consumption, excessive stress, or prolonged exposure to humid environments—the fungi may proliferate more rapidly, worsening the condition and potentially leading to multiple infections. Early and active treatment measures are necessary for onychomycosis, including topical medications, oral antifungal drugs, and surgical treatment, to effectively control the disease and prevent recurrence.
